‘Striders’ will be invited to walk or run a variety of routes through the Howgills. Some of our lean and ambitious fell runners will attempt a marathon course plotted between the iconic Howgill summits. For others a successful ascent of Winder will be an achievement they can be proud of. All ‘Striders’ will be celebrated. All routes will be filled with Sedbergh friends. 

Five routes have been chosen with lengths varying from 2 miles to 26.2 miles, a full marathon on the fells. Routes will be flagged and marshalled; however some navigation will be required on the longer routes. All ‘Striders’ will contribute to fundraising for the transformative Roger Lupton Scholarships and Bursaries Scheme. ‘Striders’ will be invited to raise through sponsorship or to contribute a minimum of £500. If this target is met by all participants, then the ‘Sedbergh Solstice Stride’ will raise enough money to educate a Roger Lupton Scholar throughout their full 5 years at Sedbergh, providing a life-changing opportunity for that young person. 

The day will end with a fitting celebration in the ‘Solstice Stride Village’. In a party to match the scale of our ‘Striders’ achievements, the assembled throng will eat, drink, be merry and dance the night away. The dinner will be held at one of the finest medieval guildhalls in the world. Redoubtable tales, fascinating architecture and intriguing, rare artefacts, all under a stunning 14th Century oak roof. Delve into York’s entrepreneurial past, present and future following stories of the “mystery of mercers” – business pioneers who made it happen: from the medieval wool trade, via the railways, chocolate and two universities to the 21st century Science City.

We will start at 4.30pm with a drinks reception, followed by a 2-course dinner. We will then head to York Minster for an amazing Carol Service, returning to the Hall after the service for festive drinks and mince pies.

Following the great success of the WW1 Pilgrimage, the OS Club plans to launch its first History Society trip on Wednesday 3^rd September – Monday 8^th September 2025 to Arnhem, Netherlands, and the surrounding area where there was some significant OS involvement during WW2. After completing the tour of Arnhem, the party will also join up with the School Battlefields trip to celebrate the 500^th Anniversary of Sedbergh School in Ypres. There will be performances by the School Choir at St Martin’s Cathedral in Ypres and a special performance of the Last Post at the Menin Gate. The trip will also offer the chance to learn more about the history and culture of both areas in addition to paying tribute to the previous generations of Sedberghians. We will be retaining the services of Dr Bruce Cherry who was so instrumental in making the Pilgrimage tours a success.

The OS Club is delighted to welcome the Sedberghian community back to Sedbergh for OS Weekend on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th September 2024. 

OS Weekend will be a celebration of all that is good about Sedbergh. Will Carling OBE (Winder, 1979-84), former Captain of England Rugby, will be joining us to give inspiration to the 1^st XV as they take on Ipswich School. We are delighted that he will also be our headline speaker at the annual evening OS Dinner (6.30pm for 7.15pm) which is a celebration of sport, of friendship, of our collective history, and of those who have served the School and made it what it is today.

Memorial Service for Ed (Ned) Campbell (4.00pm School Chapel)

It was with great sadness that we learnt of the passing of Ed (Ned) Campbell in June, former member of staff, who finally lost his battle with cancer on 12th June 2024. Ed taught English at Sedbergh but also took on the roles of Housemastership at Powell House (1978-93) and Evans House (1998-2004). From 1993 to 1998 he was appointed Second Master. He was an inspiration to generations of OS whom he taught and to the colleagues whom he guided. You are cordially invited to join, but please let us know if you are coming by booking a free ticket, so we know how many to cater for at the reception in Queen’s Hall afterwards.

The weekend will feature OS Hockey.

President’s Lunch

The OS President’s Lunch will be held on Saturday at 12.30pm at the Hirst Centre. Following the lunch there will be a girls’ School hockey match on the Newfield all weather pitches and the 1st XV with be playing Ipswich School on Buskholme.

On the Saturday evening the OS Weekend Dinner will take place in Powell Hall. There will be a drinks reception upon arrival in and around Powell Hall followed by a three-course meal, with tea and coffee to follow. Last year we were delighted to welcome over 150 guests for the dinner and more still for the sporting fixtures held throughout the weekend.

Minibus Transport

Old Sedberghians, former and current staff members, parents both past and present and friends of the School are all warmly invited to participate in the annual Alumni Cross Country Race in London which this year will be held on Saturday 14th September 2024.

This is a long standing race hosted by Thames Hare & Hounds for old girls and boys of schools with strong cross country running traditions. It started in 1953 and has grown in popularity, now attracting around 300 runners from around 60 schools. The course of 5 miles on Wimbledon Common is a shortened version of the Blues Race course. The OS Running Team has participated for a number of years with a growing number of runners.

All ages and running abilities are welcome! Seventy-year-olds compete with eighteen-year-olds – the fastest time is usually close to 25 mins and the back markers closer to 60 minutes.

There are four team competitions within the race:

• The Henry VIII Trophy – an open race to be won by the team whose first four finishers have the lowest score, the winner of the race scoring 1 and so on upwards.
• The Old Brentwood’s Trophy – Veterans’ 40 race, participants to be aged 40 or over on race day, with three to score.
• The Chataway Trophy – the Veterans’ 50 race, participants to be aged 50 or over on race day, with three to score.
• The Old Denstonian Trophy – the Veterans’ 60 race, participants to be aged 60 or over on race day, with three to score.
• The Norman Berry Cup for the individual winner, who must be one of a team of at least three.

Wimbledon Common is located on the A3 at the Richard Evans Memorial Playing Fields (Roehampton Vale, SW15 3PQ). The meeting venue is the Pavillion/Club House which overlooks the playing fields. There is ample parking located adjacent to the A3 and infront of the Pavillion/Club House.

This will be followed by the usual custom of OS drinks and dinner at the Green Man Pub, Putney Heath.
